Should actors have a no-kiss standard? The question is inspired by the trending conversation with Nollywood actor, Clinton Joshua. Joshua set a no-kiss rule when he started a career in acting. In his recent interview, he says:
“If I’m good at it, producers will likely give me the same role over and over again and I don’t want to kiss half the girls in Nollywood.”
Reactions to his interview have been mixed. We ask a few Nollywood cinephiles what they think?
“He makes a valid point and it has obviously worked for him. We cannot say his standards have cost him opportunities. Clinton is booked and busy. So you wonder why many other younger actors are not inspired to hold same values. Clinton is thriving, so the next actor who doesn’t want to kiss half the number of his/her colleagues, wouldn’t have to be afraid to set that rule for themselves.” – Clementina

“In this ridiculously sexualized world and oral herpes, I stand with whatever standards Clinton has concerning not swallowing other people’s saliva in the name of acting.” – Bosede
“The thing is, many of these roles that require kissing can still be achieved without it. Watch these movies on YouTube, you will realize there is no need for half the kissing that happens.” – Jerry
“I think he has boxed himself and will limit his opportunities. As an actor, especially inan industry boxed into making mainly romantic movies, it will be a challenge to sustain his decision not to kiss.” – Omena
“I’m actually quite impressed that a young man will start his career in acting with a standard not to kiss. He wasn’t afraid to set that standard and ready to face whatever challenges or limitations that come with it. Impressive.” – Tolu

“There are camera angles to shoot scenes that do not require you actually kissing even though it is written in the script. Actors/actresses who feel uncomfortable kissing can take advantage of certain shots that make it seem kissing is happening when it is not. I do not think outrightly refusing to kiss can be sustained in an industry with very minimal genres to explore.” – Jay
“He said what he said. I’m sure his family will be proud of him.” – Rita
